As the Mayan hero Técun lay dying, a sorceress cast a spell tying her bloodline to him, so that one day he could return and avenge their people....

Following a near-death experience, Cassandra Gonzales is haunted by erotic dreams of a mysterious man. As the dreams intensify, she is compelled to travel to Guatemala in search of him. There she learns that her blood has opened a gate - and she is the only one who can bring the great warrior back from the afterlife.

Once faced with Técun in the flesh, Cassie fears the need he stirs within her. She aches to submit to the pleasure he promises, but first she must learn to trust in him, and in her own desires. Their time for sensual exploration is brief - Técun's killer has escaped, intent on sacrificing Cassie and wreaking havoc on the world. Now, only Cassie's complete and willing surrender to Técun will give him the power to defeat the demon once and for all....

The Bloodgate Warrior (Audible Audio Edition) Joely Sue Burkhart Leslie Bellair Carina Press Books

I haven't read either the full story that came before (The Bloodgate Guardian) or the short piece that she released in preparation for this book to come out (Bloodgate (The Maya Bloodgates)). I know. Shame on me. I haven't read them for the simple reason that I fell off the blog reader radar for a while, and missed the release of the first novel. Then I figured I'd wait for this one before reading either of the two. And, having read The Bloodgate Warrior, I can tell you that I will be reading the other two stories.

This book, even though it's a sequel, doesn't seem to have much in the way of spoilers for the first book. The one thing that I did pick out as potential spoiler material is that the main characters from The Bloodgate Guardian survive and get together at the end. But you know what? It's a romance. And it's a Joely book. Happy Endings (even if they're just Happy For Now endings) are a given.
One thing that this book (likely the series) makes me want to do is research Mayan history and legends. I read the blog Joely posted on Carina Press about the similarities between Mayan legend and the Arthurian legend. I love that kind of story, and so this one was a joy for me. I especially loved finding out after the fact that this was a real Mayan legend, and not just something Joely made up.

To balance the love I had for the similarities to the Arthurian legend, I'm going to point out the part I liked the least. Some of the sex scenes (which I've come to learn Joely writes really well) also involve blood. I'm not a fan of mixing blood and sex, personally. I understand that it's part of the magic system Joely has created for this world. Do note that it's not done in a way that makes me squeamish at all. It's just not my cup of tea.

Long story short? This is a really good read. It's got strong characters (including a heroine who comes into her own by the end) and a solid plot. The supporting characters are nicely developed as well, even if they don't get nearly as much screen time as the main characters. This is definitely worth picking up and reading, especially since Amazon makes it so easy to purchase.

The Bloodgate Warrior (Audible Audio Edition) Joely Sue Burkhart Leslie Bellair Carina Press Books Reviews

Erotica-paranormal

18 and older

I found this read HOT! I do not know what else word to use for it.
Yes there is violents and sexy. That is what put's the story together.
Who wouldn't want to have dreams about a hunky warrior from the past? Not just hunky but smoking hot.
I find that Tecun and Cassie make a great par. Cassie spends her whole life thinking she has it all. To after a near death by drowning, she finds she is missing something, submerging big. She go's off to find this dream man and finds a whole lot more.
Tecun is locked behind a gate but finds his way out though someone very special to him.
This one I would say is for someone who is looking for a hot, steamy, and sexy read!
Burkhart, J.S. The Bloodgate Warrior.

***I was gifted an ARC - I am not related to the author, I do not personally know her, and I am not paid for this review. I was simply asked to post a review after reading - nothing else.***
My initial impression with this story It's a good one, it's told really well. I'm bummed that it's short, but I'm a greedy reader. ;-)

I've already read ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE WITH...A GOD? (a Paranormal Romance) (Accidentally Yours) I was thinking the similarities were a bit too close after the first few pages; it was so off-putting I had to put this story down for a few days and come back to finish it. I am very glad that I walked away, cleared my head and came back.

Fortunately, JSB doesn't write about whining, sniveling heroines. (Thank heavens.) Here, Cassie (the h) is a seemingly ordinary young woman with a seemingly ordinary life, until one day she's involved in an accident and very nearly drowns. Her best friend Natalie pulls her out, but from this point forward Cassie begins to dream. And wowza!, what a dream! She's dreaming of the H, Técun - essentially a being the Mayans worshipped as a god, but from what I can gather, he's been around a lot longer than the Mayans. And she's dreaming that he's trapped, and only she can set him free. Amongst other things. (This is, after all, an erotic romance.) Finally, afraid that she's losing her mind, she tells her grandmother about these dreams. Her grandmother is apparently very non-plussed, and simply hands Cassie a journal that has been in their family for centuries - and starts with a Tlaxacalan Princess. Suddenly, Cassie's reading the story of the man appearing in her dreams, and is no longer able to reject her dreams as fantasy - or this man. Not quite as ready for the straight-jacket and padded room combination as she'd previously thought, she finally lets go of her preconceived notions of what "is" and "can't be" and goes to Guatemala to find her dream lover and set him free.

Pros I really enjoy this story. I'm highly likely to read it again - especially when I need a break from all the New York City-based stories that inundate the market. Once I returned to the story with a clear head, the story was easy to read, highly entertaining, and there weren't any gaping holes in the logic of either the plot - or the h. (I admit I did a little happy dance. All too often authors "fix" problems in their stories by simply using their magic pen. And for those of us who read, that's a very annoying habit. But JSB doesn't do that, and I celebrated.) The suspense and danger was there, and it was clear. I liked that we didn't know until almost the end exactly why the villain was able to come back in the first place. (Cool move, that.) And, of course, introducing stand-alone characters for the next in the series - good move. I don't mind continuing characters, but sometimes it's purely gratuitous (*cough*cough* that'd be K.A. *cough*); this wasn't.

Cons It was shorter than I'd like -a "mere" 40k words. (*rollseyes*) Again, I'm a greedy reader.

I'd recommend this to anyone who's in the mood for a new setting, a well-told story, and ***doesn't mind erotica.*** OH and Best Of All just like every other JSB story I've read, it's been spell-checked and edited.  Bless you, JSB. For that alone you have earned my gratitude; but your stories moved to auto-buy ranks because you also tell a great story.

Overall, I'm happily giving this one a solid 4.5/5*.
I really enjoy the magical tale of good and evil, such struggle and triumph. I recommend her books and hope she writes another one soon.
